Understanding Wisdom Tooth Surgery: What You Need to Know
Wisdom teeth are third permanent molars.
Wisdom tooth surgery, also known as third molar extraction, is a common dental procedure performed to remove the third molars, or “wisdom teeth,” which typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. These teeth are located at the back of the mouth and often cause problems due to their late eruption, limited space, or improper alignment.
The surgical procedure is usually performed by an oral surgeon or a dentist with experience in oral surgery. It involves making an incision in the gum tissue, removing any bone that blocks access to the tooth, and extracting the wisdom tooth. In some cases, the tooth may need to be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal.
Wisdom tooth surgery is typically done under local anesthesia, which numbs the area being treated. However, general anesthesia may be administered for complex cases or patients with anxiety. After the procedure, patients may experience some swelling, discomfort, and mild bleeding, which can be managed with pain medications and proper post-operative care.
The decision to undergo wisdom tooth surgery is often based on factors such as the presence of symptoms like pain or infection, the risk of future complications, and the overall dental health of the individual. X-rays and a thorough examination by a dentist or oral surgeon are usually done to determine the necessity of the procedure.
It’s important to follow the dentist’s post-operative instructions, maintain good oral hygiene, and attend any follow-up appointments for optimal healing and recovery.
