Saving Your Tooth from Extraction

Root canal treatment is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort to the patient. In addition it is now possible to have a one sitting root canal treatment in most cases.

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure performed to save a severely damaged or infected tooth. It involves the removal of the damaged or infected pulp from the inside of the tooth, followed by cleaning, disinfection, and sealing of the root canals.

The pulp, located within the tooth’s core, consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues.

When the pulp becomes infected or injured due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures, it can cause severe pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, swelling, and even abscess formation.

Root canal treatment is typically performed by an endodontist or a general dentist with specialized training. The procedure begins with the administration of local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience for the patient. Once the tooth is numb, the dentist creates an access point to reach the pulp chamber and root canals.

Using specialized instruments, the dentist carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals, and shapes them to receive a filling material called gutta-percha. After filling the canals, a temporary or permanent filling is placed on the access point. In some cases, a dental crown may be recommended to restore the strength and aesthetics of the treated tooth.

Root canal treatment allows for the preservation of the natural tooth, eliminating the need for extraction. It relieves pain, treats infection, and restores functionality, enabling patients to chew and speak comfortably. With proper care, a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment can last a lifetime.
